Following a geotechnical assessment of the site today, more cracking has been discovered at the top of the cliff face. With the current wet weather, it has been advised to divert vehicles away from the site.
Waitaki District Council has decided to close the road due to the potential hazard.
Council is working with its partners and the landowner for the best approach, assessment and treatment of this complex and developing issue.
In a media release issued on Thursday afternoon, the council says "We appreciate the frustration for the community at this road closure, but are prioritising safety first, movement second."
The road will remain closed over the weekend and will be reviewed again on Tuesday 18 June 2024.
Signed diversions will be in place.
The A2O Cycle Track will remain open at this stage. More information will be provided when available.
